Our Heritage

Brian Geary was born into the motor trade in Kilmeedy, Co. Limerick where his father, Bryan Geary, operated a garage selling motor cars by Austin and Morris and tractors by Steyr. In 1977 Brian started his own car sales business operating out of Rathkeale, Co. Limerick. As a freelance car dealer Brian quickly carved quite a reputation for himself, and soon afterwards on 19 October 1979 Toyota offered him a main dealership for Limerick County.

Over the years Brian Geary’s and Toyota forged a formidable partnership and in early 2012 we were privileged to be granted the opportunity by Toyota to serve the people of both Limerick City and County. In March 2012 we opened our second dealership in Raheen in Limerick City.

Today, Brian Geary Toyota is managed by Brian and his son Brian Jnr, who joined the business in 2002. We have a team of 61 people employed across our two dealerships with a healthy mix of experience and youth. The 10 longest serving members of our team average 29 years of service each!

Our success over the years has been built on a policy of complete customer satisfaction and value for money. This simple policy has resulted in customer loyalty that now transcends generations, with parents, their children and in some cases grandchildren coming through our doors.

HISTORY

The Geary family has been involved in the motor trade in Limerick dating back to the 1930s. Brian’s father, Bryan, ran a 'one-stop-shop' business in Kilmeedy Co. Limerick which included car sales. When we say 'one-stop-shop' we mean it! At one point, Bryan’s businesses included the local supermarket, fuel distributors, hardware store, post office, car sales of Austin and Commer, tractor sales of Steyr, car servicing & repairs, insurance brokerage, haulage business transporting crops and livestock, a farm and he was also the local undertaker!

From a very early age Brian and his two brothers Jim and John helped out in their father’s businesses. Brian was particularly drawn to the motoring side and spent most school holidays working in the garage servicing and selling cars. This left a lasting impression. After his school years and a brief period working in the bank, Brian “returned to his first love” working as a car salesman for a main dealer in Galway. Having spent a few very successful years there, Brian decided the time was right to start his own venture as a freelance car dealer. In May 1977 he returned to Limerick and purchased the former J.H. Teskey & Sons Ltd. premises at Castlematrix just outside Rathkeale.

It was not long before Brian carved quite a reputation for himself, and soon afterwards on 19 October 1979 Toyota visited his Rathkeale premises. Impressed with what they saw, Brian was offered a main Toyota dealership for Limerick County. At that time Toyota, having entered the Irish market in 1972, were the number 3 selling car brand in Ireland. However, Brian was convinced that Toyota would quickly take the number 1 position and a formidable partnership was formed.

Through the 1980s, the company and its association with Toyota grew from strength to strength. Toyota provided a top quality product while Brian and his dedicated staff focused on delivering complete customer satisfaction in sales and after-sales. In fact, Brian and the team were literally setting the standards for customer service back then. Frequently highlighted as the example to follow, Brian Geary Toyota was a serial award winner for customer satisfaction and at one point won 3 consecutive Toyota Customer Satisfaction awards.

In 1991 a senior executive from Toyota's headquarters in Japan visited each of the Toyota dealers in Ireland. Upon completion of his tour, Mr. Muramoto commented that the garage and staff at Castlematrix was the "Number One Dealership which he had visited" during his time in Ireland. A year later, the Irish Toyota dealers visited Toyota head office in Japan and Brian was honoured to make a speech on behalf of the Toyota Ireland dealers.

In 2002, Brian Jnr., a qualified accountant by trade, joined the business making it the third generation of the Geary family in the motor trade in Limerick. Brian Jnr and the team at Brian Geary’s have since embraced the principles of “Kaizen”, the Japanese term for continuous process improvement and have implemented processes and technology that allowed the business to flourish within a well-controlled environment. This has allowed the business to evolve and seamlessly adapt to market changes over the years.

The beginning of 2012 marked a major milestone for the company. After 35 years serving customers in Rathkeale Co. Limerick, we were privileged to be granted the opportunity by Toyota to serve the people of Limerick City and County. In March 2012 we opened our second dealership in Raheen in Limerick City.

When Brian first opened back in 1977, there was just himself as he serviced, repaired, ordered parts, bought and sold all the cars himself. Today, Brian Geary Toyota has a team of 61 across two dealerships.
